Burris’ versatile Veracity PH 4-20x 50mm riflescope makes it a great option whether hunting big game, banging long-range steel or sniping burrowing rodents.
Burris Optics introduced the Veracity PH 4-20x 50mm at SHOT Show 2023 and it became available to authorized dealers last July. Headquartered in Greeley, Colorado, Burris has been in business since 1971. In that time, the name has become a respected source for rifle and handgun scopes and other hunting-optic solutions. The Veracity PH brings Burris into the high-tech world of long-range shooting.
The scope includes an exposed elevation turret including a sensor that ties directly into the internal heads-up display, providing dialed-distance settings.
The Veracity PH includes a few built-in technologies designed to take the guesswork out of long-range shooting, while eliminating time-consuming ballistic charts or the need to test your math skills. The first of these modern technologies is the new Programable Elevation Knob PEK system. Secondly, this optical system integrates HUD technology, or a Heads-Up Display, found at the top of the field of view. The HUD feature works in conjunction with Bluetooth connectivity for uploading custom ballistic data for a specific rifle and load through the BurrisConnect Mobile App and dialing to produce dead-on hits on distant targets. The system is extremely fast and accurate and was developed after years of research and development.
The magnification ring of the riflescope is aggressively knurled to provide a firm purchase when wet or while wearing gloves.
The Veracity PH’s complex technology translates into simplicity for the shooter. The PEK system and clear, illuminated Heads-Up Display provides a precise distance while dialing the range and accurate wind holds, while also revealing rifle cant and allowing users to monitor the battery level. Of course, those batteries make it illegal during big-game hunts in some states, like my home of Idaho. For true technophobes, there is also the user-configurable/uploadable ballistic data to navigate, via the BurrisConnect App and accessed through the scope’s Bluetooth connectivity. That said, and as a true technophobe who can barely operate his own smartphone, I can say set-up, downloads and operation were pretty straightforward. What is gained for the hassle is assurance that applied corrections will provide dead-nuts solutions in the field, without a lot of thinking while your adrenaline-addled brain reels at the sight of a trophy animal.
The clickless elevation turret is paired with a digital position sensor that applies corrections in 1⁄10-MOA increments, allowing dialing near-exact distances in yards or meters. The elevation turret also holds ¼-MOA laser hash marks that provide redundancy and peace of mind for us old-timers who have a difficult time trusting electronics.
A simple rundown of a shot sequence would look like this:
1. Range the target using any rangefinder.
2. Dial to the displayed distance in yards or meters while consulting the Heads-Up Display.
3. Squeeze the shot.
The Veracity PH as engineered does not require Wi-Fi or cell service to operate, as once the scope is programmed through the BurrisConnect App, the scope operates as a stand-alone platform. In other words, Bluetooth connectivity between the mobile device and scope is needed only when uploading ballistics or changing scope settings. While connected to the app, users can create customized ballistic profiles for multiple bullet weights, rifles, and atmospheric conditions, storing them within the app and uploading them only as needed.
The side parallax and illumination system controls are sandwiched on the left side of the optic and the parallax wheel is raised to separate it from the illumination wheel.
So, there is all of that… As a stand-alone, the rifle scope includes a 4-20x zoom system that covers everything from slam dunk whitetail-stand ranges, to wide-open western or “bean-field’ settings. The optics are what I have come to expect from Burris, including high-performance glass and coatings that provide exceptional brightness and clarity in any weather or lighting conditions. The front focal plane (FFP) reticle is borrowed from the proven Burris Veracity, including the Wind MOA FFP setup allowing accurate wind drift hold-off and hold-over compensation, accurate at any magnification. I found the reticle pleasing, useable at 4x and not too thick at 20x, and it included an unobtrusive center “crosshair.” Side parallax adjustments keep targets on the same plane from 50 yards to infinity for precision shot placement at extended ranges, also ensuring the sharpest viewing possible.
The 50mm objective lenses, in conjunction with high-tech lens coatings, provide bright, crisp viewing in any reasonable lighting conditions.
The Veracity PH included an exposed elevation turret and capped windage control. Three set screws set at 120 degrees must be loosened to reset 0. The absence of audible/tactile turret clicks bothers me a little, though the heads-up display makes it easy enough to track movements. The side parallax knob is sandwiched between the main tube and illumination wheel and raised slightly to better segregate it from the illumination controls. Illumination and heads-up display are powered by two CR2450 lithium coin batteries placed back-to-back and covered by a knurled screw cap.
The windage control turret is capped to protect against dust and moisture. Horizontal hash marks allow making wind corrections without the turret.
All the control surfaces, save the diopter ring, include aggressive, though not obnoxious, knurling for positive control when wet or while wearing gloves. The magnification ring was somewhat stiff, especially in cold weather while calling coyotes, but will likely loosen with more use. The scope arrived with Burris logoed, spring-loaded flip-up lens caps. Push on the finger tabs and they snap straight up and out of the way automatically. They also clicked back into place positively to eliminate inadvertent opening. Magnification values sit on the rotating ring, indexed against a static wedge, marked 4, 5, 8, 10, 12, 16 and 20.
The Veracity PH 4-20x 50mm riflescope includes easy-to-manipulate controls that allow conducting adjustments without pulling your head off the stock while shooting.
To put the Veracity PH through the paces, I mounted it to a Savage 110 Carbon Predator chambered in 6mm ARC. The ARC is a perfect test of any elevation system, as it is generally ballistically talented, but not a ball of fire. That is to say it will reach out there, but not with a laser-straight trajectory. The ballistic profile for Hornady 108-grain ELD Match ammunition was easy enough to download, and the Savage accurate enough to provide reliable impacts out to 400 yards. Shooting at isolated rocks lodged in defunct logging-road banks at 259, 315 and 407 yards, the heads-up display and elevation turret provided pleasingly accurate tracking, all hits close enough to hit a coyote, if not a rockchuck. The turret returned to the 100-yard zero precisely, maintaining dead-center grouping.
With its simple operation, intuitive data display, and ability to input customized ballistic profiles, the Burris Veracity PH 4-20x 50mm is a solid tool for maximizing the effectiveness of the most challenging shots. Visit BurrisOptics.com to learn more.
