With riflemen’s newfound interest in long-range shooting, it has become more common to encounter complete systems for dealing with the challenges of going to extremes. To this end, Horus Vision – part of the Ray Dennis Group that also owns Nightforce – has introduced the HoVR Complete Shooter Package, which includes everything needed to start down the path of precision long-range shooting. This is a four-part system that includes a HoVR 5-20x 50mm riflescope ($1,499.99 value), HoVR 1.0 2000 BT Laser Range Finder ($429.99 value), HoVR 1.0 Weather Meter ($114.99 value), and a complimentary Horus Ballistic App, to help shooters wrap their heads around it all. That totals $2,044.97, but when purchased in a bundle, the starting price is $1,799.99. For shooters looking to confidently extend their maximum effective range this kit represents an incredible bargain.

The Horus Vision HoVR 5-20x 50mm Complete Shooter Package included a 5-20x 50mm riflescope, laser rangefinder good to 2,000 yards, Horus Weather Meter and a free smartphone app that combine to make easy work of long-range shooting.

Starting with the basics, the HoVR scope delivers Horus’ renowned reticle system set in the first focal plane and exposed elevation turret housed in a 30mm barrel. The 1.0 2000 BT provides Bluetooth connectivity to the Horus Ballistics App, 2,000-yard/meter ranging capability and 5,000-pop battery life. The 1.0 Weather Meter provides wind velocity, temperature, barometric pressure, and humidity important to making precision long-range corrections via a large, easy-to-read display with illumination.

The HoVR 5-20x 50mm tested included Horus’ TREMOR3 U.S. SOCOM reticle, which is also the official reticle of the Precision Rifle Series (PRS). The scope uses top-quality Japanese optics for exceptionally crisp images and excellent color fidelity. The scope is designed and manufactured to withstand the recoil of the most powerful magnum cartridges, or the hard knocks encountered in the field. It includes a fast-focus eyepiece and side parallax adjustments. As mentioned, the elevation turret is an exposed design, the windage turret is covered with a threaded aluminum cap and corrections are made in .1 MIL or ¼-MOA movements.

When shooting the Horus Vision HoVR 5-20x 50mm riflescope, corrections are easily made by dialing windage and elevation or employing the optic’s advanced TREMOR3 U.S. SOCOM reticle.

The Horus TREMOR3 reticle seems quite busy at first glance, but familiarity will maximize speed while ensuring accuracy. The unique layout and patented features provide quick range estimation capabilities, while also allowing shooters to make fast wind speed and drop corrections and nearly instant second-shot corrections. These features have made this reticle popular with elite U.S. warfighters such as USMC Scout Snipers and U.S. Navy SEALS, and by multiple PRS champions, all of whom regularly engage multiple targets.

The elevation turret of the Horus Vision HoVR 5-20x 50mm scope is exposed and waterproof, while the windage turret is capped to protect it from the elements. All movements were positive and tactile.

The TREMOR3 grid includes uniform .2 milliradians that help quickly compensate for bullet drop for any ballistic and atmospheric condition. The solid grid provides precise aiming points for extreme precision without requiring shooters to employ “Kentucky windage.” Second-shot corrections come almost automatically. The reticle also provides patented “Time of Flight Wind Dots” for accurate wind-drift holds in mulitple formats, without a ballistic solver or the need to count multiple subtensions. These can be adjusted for any ballistics and atmospheric conditions by calibrating wind dots through the Horus Ballistics App. Refined .1 MIL chevron marks found throughout the reticle provide precise range estimation by allowing “milling” target height and width. Patented Rapid Range Bars, subtending from .5 to 1 MIL, allow range estimates on targets of known size, while Moving Target Holds, represented by numbered vertical hash marks to each side of the horizontal crosshair, provide leads for targets moving at up to 10 mph. They prove compatible at ranges from 200 to 500 yards with many common cartridges. Both these systems can be used with the Accuracy 1st Speed Shooting formula. An H59 MOA reticle is also available (not tested).

All controls on the HoVR 5-20x 50mm by Horus Vision are aggressively knurled for a firm purchase in wet weather or while wearing gloves, including the magnification ring, turrets and parallax knob.

Scope dimensions included a 13.42-inch length, 2.32-inch outer objective diameter and 1.692-inch outer ocular diameter. The design allows 5.6 inches of mounting latitude – 1.7 inches front and 2.27 inches rear. The scope weighs 28.88 ounces (1.805 pounds). The exposed elevation turret includes a user-adjustable zero stop, the windage turret capped, the former providing 17.5 MRAD, the latter 14.5 MRAD of internal adjustments corrected with .1 MRAD/¼-MOA movements. Parallax adjustment is marked 25 meters to infinity. The design provides 2.52 to 3.7 inches of eye relief for ample protection from heavy recoil and the field of view spans 6.1 (5x) to 1.62 meters (20x).

The fast focus ring, located on the ocular bell of the HoVR scope, allows bringing the reticle into clear focus with or without eyeglasses. The scope also provides a generous degree of eye relief.

The 4.3-by-3-by-1.3 inch, 7.5-ounce handheld Laser Range Finder operates on a 3-volt CR2 battery and includes 6x magnification. The eyepiece measured 16mm, and the objective lens 26mm, Horus advertises 2,000-yard capabilities with +/- 1 yard/meter accuracy. It includes an operating range of 14 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit and connects to the Horus Ballistics App via Bluetooth Version 4.0. The 4.9-by-1.9-by-1 inch, 7-ounce Weather Meter operates on two AAA batteries; also includes Bluetooth Version 4.0 connectivity. It measures wind speed in mph, km/h, ft/min, m/s, kts 0, with +/- 2 percent accuracy, and up to 67 mph. Relative humidity is measured from 5 to 95 percent with +/- 3 percent accuracy, barometric pressure from 9 to 32 inHg with +/- .5 percent accuracy, and altitude in feet or meters from 0 to 6,000 meters with +/- 5 percent accuracy.

The Horus Vision HoVR 5-20x 50mm riflescope included an easy-to-adjust zero stop on the elevation turret. This requires loosening three set screws from the turret rim and removing the turret cap.

Testing the Horus Vision HoVR 5-20x 50mm Complete Shooter Package occurred on a blustery day complete with sifting snow, in temperatures right around freezing. Proven 25-06 Remington deer-hunting loads of Sierra’s 100-grain SBT bullet seated over 50 grains of IMR-4350, shot from a love-worn Remington Model 700 BDL, were zeroed at 100 yards. They were then fired into paper at 200 and 300 yards – the limits of my public lands shooting site. With the combination of the HoVR reticle, connected Horus Laser Range Finder and Weather Meter, a dot would appear on the grid of the Horus Ballistics App on the smartphone screen. Using the suggested hold gave reliable hits at 200 and then 300 yards. While the variable wind and inherent accuracy of the loads from the test rifle challenged the 25-06’s accuracy at the longest range, all shots fired assembled groups well inside the vital areas of, say, an average coyote.

The HoVR 5-20x 50mm riflescope from Horus Vision is equipped with a side parallax knob, ensuring perfect eye alignment and tack-sharp viewing at any range.

Yet, it was easy to see what could be accomplished, quickly and nearly effortlessly, with a more talented rifle and compatible loads. The Horus Vision HoVR 5-20x 50mm Complete Shooter Package, as advertised, truly has the potential to make easy work of long-range shooting. See HorusVision.com to learn more.
